West Coast GRC residents’ needs ‘come first and foremost’: Minister Desmond Lee

19/01/2024

Minister for National Development and Member of Parliament for West Coast GRC Desmond Lee has stressed that West Coast residents’ needs will come first and foremost”.

Following former Transport Minister S. Iswaran’s resignation from the People’s Action Party, stepping down as Transport Minister and MP for West Coast GRC, Minister Lee has assured residents in the West Coast constituency that the MPs’ focus was on serving their residents.

Since July 2023, Minister Lee and other West Coast GRC MPs – Ang Wei Neng, Foo Mee Har and Rachel Ong – and Pioneer MP Patrick Tay have stepped up and covered Iswaran’s duties on the ground in West Coast.

“These arrangements will continue. We would like to assure our residents of West Coast that we will continue to support them, and ensure that their needs are looked after,” Lee said in a Facebook post on Jan 18.

Minister Lee told the media last night (Jan 18) that since the probe started in July, there would always be concerns by residents, volunteers, and leaders whenever there were new developments.

“Our key is to make sure that we address their concerns, ensure that they get the right facts, and ensure that all of us remain united and remain focused on looking after the needs of the residents. That must be paramount,” Minister Lee added.

Iswaran was handed 27 charges in court on Jan 18, including two corruption charges, following a Corrupt Investigation Bureau investigation.

Responding to the latest developments, Minister Lee said he is saddened that Iswaran has had to resign under these circumstances, having worked with him for so many years.

“Nevertheless, we respect the system being fair, impartial and robust. We let the system take its course,” he added.

In a Facebook post, fellow MP for West Coast GRC Rachel Ong echoed Minister Lee’s promise to continue to care for the residents at West Coast.  “Together, we stand with our people at West Coast division,” she added.

In an earlier post on 15 Jan, MP Ong shared how she and the team of volunteers at PAP West Coast Branch bonded over roti prata after serving residents at the Meet-the-People session held on Monday nights.

Needless to say, the West Coast GRC team – MPs and activists, will continue to serve the residents at West Coast faithfully and well.
