Nee Soon GRC has launched the Nee Soon Cares initiative for the third year, providing close to three million dollars in shopping vouchers to help up to 72,000 Singaporean households cope with rising cost of living.

As part of Nee Soon’s continued efforts to foster community bonding, each Singaporean household in Nee Soon GRC is eligible to receive $40 worth of e-vouchers that can be used at close to 500 participating Nee Soon merchants upon attending a designated community activity.

This marks the third year that Grassroots Advisers to Nee Soon GRC Grassroots Organisations have launched the Nee Soon Cares initiative, providing a record amount of shopping vouchers and helping more households than ever before.

Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam, along with Nee Soon Grassroots Advisers Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Louis Ng Kok Kwang, Carrie Tan Huimin and Derrick Goh Soon Hee launched the Nee Soon Cares 2024 initiative at the Multi-Purpose Court@Khatib on April 7, 2024.

Nee Soon Cares 2024 is a community-led initiative spearheaded by the five grassroots advisers with support from grassroots leaders, volunteers and the People’s Association. The grassroots organisations and local businesses raised part of the money to fund the vouchers, supported by Northwest Community Development Council.

When Nee Soon GRC launched the Nee Soon Cares voucher initiative back in 2022, the community project helped 800 needy families by providing each household with $300 worth of shopping vouchers. In 2023, the initiative aided 2,000 students from underprivileged families.

K Shanmugam said: “We are now able to extend our reach to help 72,000 households throughout the GRC, and work with an expanded network of supportive merchants. To further celebrate the power of community, residents can also look forward to the wide range of Nee Soon Cares 2024 events coming their way.”

Singaporean households in Nee Soon GRC will each receive $40 worth of shopping vouchers after attending one of various designated Nee Soon Cares 2024 activities organised under three pillars: seniors, families, and environment. The digitally distributed vouchers in $2 and $5 denominations can be redeemed at over 500 participating merchants in the GRC until May 31, 2025.

Close to 500 merchants in Nee Soon GRC ranging from food and beverage outlets to grocery stores and wet markets are participating. Officials say the scheme allows merchants to play an active role in helping the Nee Soon community while also increasing footfall at their businesses.

Kay Teck Hui, PBM, Vice-Chairman of Nee Soon East CCC  said, “Nee Soon Cares 2024 aims to foster neighborliness while alleviating cost of living challenges for residents. There are active ageing programs, IT workshops for primary schoolers, parenting workshops, financial literacy and wellness programs. We also have GRC level events like our Sustainability Festival, Family Day, Pets Fiesta and Halloween events catering to residents of all ages and interests.”
