On the ground with our West Coast MPs

20/09/2024

There is more to being an MP than conducting home visits and meet-the-people sessions.

From rallying the community to do good and celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with their residents, we look at what our Fab Four MPs Desmond Lee, Ang Wei Neng, Rachel Ong and Foo Mee Har have been up to this week.

Rallying the community to do good

Speaking of the kampong spirit, being part of a strong community can give us a sense of belonging and a helping hand. During a visit to Teban Gardens, MP Foo Mee Har thanked stallholders for supporting the local assistance programmes.

“I am deeply appreciative of the generous contributions made by our local business partners towards our community,” said MP Foo.

Launched in 2021, the WeCare@Ayer Rajah-Gek Poh Voucher Programme provide low-income families with vouchers to help them with their daily expenses. So far, over a hundred neighbourhood and market stalls in the Ayer Rajah area have joined this programme.

“I am heartened to see the strong community efforts to support the less fortunate amongst us,” added MP Foo.

Meanwhile in Telok Blangah, MP Rachel Ong has started an intergenerational “Hello Neighbour! Programme this year.

Recognising how social isolation can seriously impact well-being, this is MP Ong’s way of helping seniors combat loneliness and build new friendships.

For many of our youths, the programme also gives them the chance to flex their Mother Tongue skills. Many of our mentees have plucked up their courage to engage our seniors in their mother tongues, shared MP Ong.

The benefits of these visits have enriched all parties young and old. It is also the backbone behind building a strong community. “What began as unfamiliar faces has now evolved into strong connections shared across generations,” said MP Ong.

Celebrating the Mid-autumn Festival

It’s the season for lanterns and mooncakes! To celebrate this 2000-year-old tradition, our West Coast MPs and grassroots volunteers have organised various events around the constituency.

There were lots of performances, games, food and lantern riddles, said MP and Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, who joined residents at one of the many mid-autumn celebrations around West Coast GRC.

Over in Nanyang, MP Ang Wei Neng was heartened by the amazing turnout. “Over 3,000 residents of all ages and races came together at Nanyang’s Mid-Autumn celebrations for a night of delicious food, fun games and thrilling performances,” exclaimed MP Ang Wei Neng.

Of course, none of the events would have been possible without an army of volunteers. “Thank you,” said MP Rachel Ong, for the months of planning and tireless work to help create great memories for the community.

With the days of kampong living behind us, community events are more important than ever. After all, they act as the glue that draws Singaporeans together, helping us rebuild a modern-day and much-beloved kampong spirit.

Supporting our local hawkers

Jurong Lake Gardens is a big draw. However, MP Ang Wei Neng is giving us more reasons to embark on a journey to the West.

Showing food blogger Miss Tam Chiak around Nanyang, MP Ang is keen to highlight the epicurean delights of his constituency. “We savoured the delicious Hokkien Mee with abalone at Best Coffeeshop and the famous Popiah at NTI Coffeeshop,” shared MP Ang.

Food is a big part of our Singaporean identity, and local hawkers play a big part in keeping our neighbourhoods lively.

Keeping residents safe

Low crime does not mean no crime. That is why, together with a team of officers from the Community Policing Unit, MP Desmond Lee visited families door-to-door. The aim? To keep residents safe by raising awareness about crime prevention and emergency preparedness.

Many households have signed up for the Community Watch Scheme, where they will receive alerts and crime information around their neighbourhood, shared MP Lee.

Today, West Coast GRC is a vibrant and close-knit community that many Singaporeans proudly call home. And thanks to the dedication and hard work of our PAP MPs, West Coast will continue to stay that way in the years ahead.
