Groups targeting our Meet-the-People sessions

13/03/2025

Recently, a group calling themselves Monday of Palestine Solidarity have been targeting and disrupting the Meet-The-People Sessions (MPS) of a number of PAP MPs.

They have engaged in anti-social behaviour.

These include refusing to identify themselves, acting aggressively towards our volunteers and staff, heckling and displaying rude gestures at our residents and volunteers and secretly recording our volunteers and MPs without their knowledge or consent.

Their usual practice is to demand that the MP see them immediately, even though the MP is busy attending to residents with pressing needs. Residents come to MPS for help with important issues that affect their livelihoods, and these behaviours take time and focus away from them.

In an incident on Wednesday, these individuals screamed slurs at Minister Shanmugam at his Chong Pang MPS, when he told them he would only see them after attending to his residents. Even so, Minister Shanmugam spoke to them later for over 20 minutes.

The people of Gaza are not helped by individuals who weaponize public shaming and social pressure, or use intimidation tactics.

We will continue to advocate for Palestinians

Many of our PAP MPs, like Alex Yam, Ang Wei Neng, Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim and Mariam Jaafar, have spoken extensively about the Palestine issue in Parliament, and advocated for the rights of the Palestinian people on many occasions.

More than just words, we worked with fellow Singaporeans to raise and deliver over $17 million of aid to the people of Gaza. Our MPs worked hand in hand with local activists, and charities like the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF), while the Singapore RSAF helped deliver aid via humanitarian air drop. This is how we work together to help people of Gaza.

The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian disaster, and it is too important to be used as a political football.

That is why, when Minister Vivian Balakrishnan visited the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah in March 2024, the Singapore visiting party included Gerald Giam of the Workers Party, together with PAP MPs Alex Yam, Nadia Ahmad Samdin, Rachel Ong, and Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim.

This allowed our MPs, regardless of party affiliation, to have a fuller understanding of the situation in Palestine.

In addition, Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad travelled to Cairo last month (Feb 2025) to engage Egyptian authorities on how both countries could help Gaza with medical assistance.

These anti-social actions prevent needy S’poreans from getting help

MPS is the one of the most direct lines of assistance for many Singaporeans in need.

At any given MPS, our volunteers help fathers secure jobs, mothers get immediate help for their children, and seniors get connected to social welfare services.

Many of these requests are time-critical. For example, our volunteers have helped families on the brink of homelessness, get emergency housing on the same day.

Unfortunately, many of these residents are directly impacted by the actions of groups like these. They are unable to get the help they need, because of the disruption caused.

These are just some of the thousands of Singaporeans who are being helped by our volunteers and MPs every week.

This group has used the same tactics to disrupt MPS at the following PAP branches:

1. Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng

2. Pasir Ris East

3. Zhenghua

4. Punggol West

5. Bukit Timah

6. Nee Soon South

7. Ulu Pandan

8. Zhenghua

9. Bukit Batok East

10. Bukit Gombak

11. Jurong Central

12. Telok Blangah

13. Taman Jurong

14. Chong Pang
