THE MISSION for PM Wong, and the PAP Government is to keep Singapore and Singaporeans thriving. We will also guide Singapore through the gathering economic storm, with honesty, careful planning and decisive action.
“Our mission, our task for all of us as Singaporeans, surely must be to make sure that Singapore can continue to be a shining beacon of stability, progress and hope,” said PM Wong. “Not just the next five years. But for as long as we can, and for future generations.”
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong gave this insight into the PAP’s resolve during a press conference at the Party’s Limbang branch this weekend (12 Apr) to introduce the team that will contest Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC in the upcoming elections.
“[We] make rigorous, objective assessments of the threats and challenges that Singapore faces. Not overdoing it …but setting up quite clearly what they are,” said PM Wong. “Then we respond to it by putting in place a task force to understand how best Singapore can respond.”
“That’s how we’ve done it all this while, regardless of the criticism,” he added.
PM Wong’s frank appraisal of the situation, in his video entitled “Implication of U.S Tariffs”, received global attention for his calm, rational and honest communication with Singaporeans, including from The Rest Is Politics host Alastair Campbell, who called it “powerful” and “one of the best responses I saw this week.”
“It’s, as we said, not just about tariffs. It’s also not just about this year’s economy,” continued PM Wong at the Limbang press conference. “But also a broader concern that we are worried about. That can impact the world and impact our external environment — and can impact Singapore.”
Marsiling-Yew Tee team to keep upgrading GRC, speaking for residents
PM Wong also introduced his unchanged Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC team roster for GE2025.
He will remain the anchor minister for GRC and MP for Limbang. From the left of the picture above, Mayor (North West District) Alex Yam, Senior Minister of State for Manpower and Defence Zaqy Mohamad and MP Hany Soh will likewise continue serving Marsiling-Yew Tee.
PM Wong has upgraded his Limbang ward with family- and senior-friendly amenities. This was while he co-chaired the Multi-Ministry Task Force which let Singapore respond successfully to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also while he spearheaded Forward Singapore, the nationwide initiative to renew Singapore’s social compact.
Mayor Yam pushed for extensive infrastructure improvements for Yew Tee residents. This includes the new 979X from Chua Chu Kang Crescent to Bukit Panjang town centre, facilities along the Lifestyle Corridor. He also pushed for upcoming projects like a hawker centre, polyclinic and additional MRT stations. He is also Chairman of the local Town Council.
MP Soh champions “G.E.L” for her Woodgrove residents — Green Living Initiatives, Embracing Parenthood and Law Awareness. She is bringing Electric Vehicle chargers to every HDB Woodgrove carpark by end-2025. She has also spoken up for Woodgrove’s parents in Parliament; she moved a Parliamentary Motion this year to support people wanting to start their own family. She is also Vice-Chairperson of the Town Council.
Senior Minister of State for Manpower and Defence Zaqy Mohamad works to uplift vulnerable families and children in Marsiling with the Marsiling Cares and Comlink initiatives. These initiatives are part of the PAP’s Marsiling 2025 and 2030 masterplans. In his work at the Ministry of Manpower, he champions Progressive Wages, Workplace Fairness and workplace safety. At the Ministry of Defence, he emphasises defence, diplomacy and humanitarian aid, particularly for Gaza. He is also Deputy Chairman of MENDAKI.
“Our residents have been very forthcoming, giving me many good suggestions and ideas which empowers me to speak up for them in Parliament,” said MP Soh. “Earlier this year, in February, I have actually moved a motion in Parliament calling for more support in relation to supporting Singaporeans in their aspirations to setting up a family or extending a family. And also more support for caregivers.”
“In the last five years, we’ve made significant changes to modernise Marsiling,” said MP Zaqy. “We’ve added about 19 linkways and 34 new amenities. In the coming three years, we’ll complete 11 major linkways and 24 new amenities. Things like shelters, walkways, playgrounds, fitness corners and lights. And we will be also adding an 18 kilometre cycling path across Marsiling Woodgrove and Upper Sembawang and parts of Chua Chu Kang.”
These long-term improvements for Marsiling-Yee Tee GRC residents follow immediate cost-of-living help like the MY $1 Deals, which have helped over 10,000 households in the GRC buy groceries since the start of 2025.
Meanwhile, PM Wong also announced that the PAP will field more than 30 new candidates for GE2025, in order to refresh the Party with new energy. This is the PAP’s largest slate of new faces in recent history.
“They come from different walks of life. They’ve all excelled in their respective fields,” said PM Wong, who mentioned also that these new candidates come from the private sector, the people sector, law and academia.
“But more than that, our key prerequisite — the key thing that we look out for —is people who really have a genuine heart to serve Singapore and their fellow Singaporeans. That must always come first,” he emphasised.
PM Wong also promised that a PAP Government will take Singapore through the current trade situation, with the rules-based global order under threat.
“It is a very different world, and we have to operate in this new environment. That’s why the stakes are much higher than before,” he said. “And this is indeed what we will highlight in the election, and what the PAP offers in terms of the people, the team, and our programs and policies to take Singapore forward.”
