Our Jobseeker Support Scheme is better for workers and employers: Tan See Leng

19/04/2025

Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng sets the record straight on WP’s claims.

We disagree with the redundancy insurance as proposed in WP’s 2025 Manifesto, and “A Stronger Safety Net” video.

Here are three reasons why the Government’s SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support Scheme (JS Scheme) is better.

  1. Our scheme provides Government-funded support to those who become involuntarily unemployed. WP’s scheme will require you and your employer to pay. This takes money out of your paycheque and imposes greater financial costs on businesses, which are pertinent concerns highlighted by our tripartite partners NTUC and SNEF.
  2. Our scheme has clearly set out eligibility criteria and payout quantum. We want to focus support on the workers who may be most in need of it after facing unemployment shocks, rather than make all workers contribute to a mandatory unemployment insurance scheme.
  3. On top of financial support, we help workers look for new, better jobs through career coaching and skills training. We know that the best form of unemployment support is good jobs.

The SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support Scheme reflects the PAP Government’s refreshed social compact with Singaporeans.

As I said in Parliament, we will always help and provide resources for those who step up and want to do more for themselves.

The PAP has always fought for good jobs for Singaporeans. We have spared no effort to grow the economic pie and to equip Singaporeans with the skills to seize new opportunities.

We will never stop fighting for Singaporeans.
