UNITY. THIS is the simple and powerful principle that the PAP has upheld for about 60 years. It is how multiracial Singapore thrives and enjoys peace on a fundamental, everyday level.
The PAP will continue standing true to this core principle. At the PAP’s first rally for GE2025 (24 Apr), Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower Zaqy Mohamad made a bold speech against the identity politics which divide other countries.
“Across the world, politics has become a source of division when politics end up splitting societies by racial concerns, religious beliefs or single-cause issues,” he said.
“Pro-LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual] and anti-LGBT,” he added, giving examples. “Pro-abortion, pro-life causes. Pro-Palestinian, pro-Israel. Even families and friendships are torn apart just because of politics.”
SMS Zaqy also called upon the nation’s politicians to put the country before self, particularly during the intensity of GE2025.
“We all have our belief systems, we all have our principles. We all also have our personal hurt and grievances,” he said. “As politicians, we do face personal conflicts when we have to put national interest first ahead of our own personal grievances and pain. But we must never, never allow politics to feed into this, to create division among our people.”
“We have invested years to build peace and stability here in Singapore, which very few places in the world can say they have done so,” he added.
“Divisive politics is not the kind of politics that we want in Singapore,” he continued. “I hope that in this General Election, we continue to respect that.”
