“SO THIS is outside the HDB or Government budget — including the Town Council’s budget — to build,” said MP Don Wee (Chua Chu Kang GRC) back when Petir interviewed him (15 Dec) about The Bricks, his cycle park project for Brickland ward residents at Chua Chu Kang Avenue 7. “It’s really leveraging personal entrepreneurship and networks to implement and construct the project.”
Which was exactly what MP Wee did. He partnered with the Singapore Cycling Federation (SCF) to design The Bricks and fundraised over $1 million towards its construction. He put in the legwork on the administrative front, going to the HDB and the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) for permission to use that land at Avenue 7.

MP Wee’s tenacity is showing concrete results. The Bricks had its groundbreaking ceremony this past Sunday (11 Aug), with Deputy Prime Minister (and fellow Chua Chu Kang MP) Gan Kim Yong, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng, MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim (Chua Chu Kang GRC) and MP Wee’s own residents joining him for this milestone event.
There was a mass cycling segment for these Bricklanders (and other bike enthusiasts) as part of the groundbreaking, with tickets snapped up by residents.
The Bricks will finish construction in 2025. As an integrated sports facility built to international standards, it will cater to Bricklanders young and old, as well as residents with special needs.
It will also bring the 2029 Southeast Asian Games to Brickland: The Bricks will have a high-performance track, and in fact will be Singapore’s only facility with a BMX racing track and ancillary pump track.
“I am as thrilled as you are about the upcoming sports facilities in Brickland, including a sheltered basketball court, fitness corner, playground, and the highly-anticipated Cycle Park,” said (13 Aug) MP Wee.
