GE2025: K Shanmugam reassures S’poreans on jobs, cost of living and building an even better Yishun

30/04/2025

The PAP team for Nee Soon GRC held its rally last night (29 April). Leading the 5-member team is Minister K Shanmugam, a veteran MP for Chong Pang since 1988.

During the rally, Mr Shanmugam dived straight into two top-of-mind issues (i.e. jobs and the cost of living) that affect not just Nee Soon residents but all Singaporeans.

American’s actions could result in some serious economic issues for us, said Mr Shanmugam.

“(But) we are preparing ourselves. We will do what we can to save jobs and help our businesses. And we have the reserves to try and get through any crisis.”

On helping Singaporeans address the cost of living, Mr Shanmugam reiterated that the best way to beat inflation “is to make sure people get good jobs”.

Singapore’s ability to attract investments, create jobs and generate economic growth is how we can grow the pie for all Singaporeans.

In addition, Mr Shanmugam also explained how the GST allows the government to “direct transfers”.

“The top 20% (earners) and foreigners pay most of the GST. We collect it and help people with lower income.”

The GST Voucher scheme will offset at least five years of additional GST expenses for the majority of Singaporean households.

New candidate Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi also reassured residents about the cost of living.

Yishun will be a place of shelter for those struggling with rising costs, said Dr Harun.

Over the years, ground-up initiatives such as the Nee Soon Cares initiative and Project 50=100 have been rolled out to provide extra help to lower-middle-income families.

“We will continue these initiatives and find new ways to further improve the lives of our Nee Soon residents,” shared fellow new candidate Goh Hanyan.

Being a mother of three young children, Ms Goh said that she understands the struggles of Singaporeans “straddling multiple priorities”.

As such, she plans on championing a society built on kindness, hope and strength so that families and caregivers do not have to journey alone.

Besides Dr Harun and Ms Goh, longtime grassroots volunteers Jackson Lam and Lee Hui Ying will also make their political debut as part of the Nee Soon GRC team.

We ask for your trust and confidence again, said Mr Shanmugam at the end of the rally.

“Together, we will continue to build an even better Yishun and a stronger community!”
