Spalling concrete from the ceiling of a bathroom fell on a Chong Pang senior early on Thursday morning (19 Jun). He needed a hospital stay and over 10 stitches for the injuries suffered.
According to a post by the resident’s daughter, Siti Nurhashikin, her 65-year-old father had been getting ready for morning prayers when the ceiling “suddenly collapsed” on him, causing him to suffer head, shoulder and knee injuries.
Minister K Shanmugam, MP for Chong Pang and Nee Soon GRC, responded swiftly, visiting the family at their flat the very next day (20 Jun) to reassure them, and to inspect the damage to the bathroom in person.

“It’s our duty to handle this,” said Minister Shanmugam (22 Jun) when the senior’s daughter left a message of appreciation on his Facebook.
The team at Nee Soon Town Council and grassroots volunteers have also pitched in to help. They have linked up with HDB and the town council to help the family, while HDB has sent a contractor to remove the loose remaining concrete.

Minister Shanmugam also asked a long-time grassroots volunteer to keep in contact, for any issues that the family might have, including assistance with payment for the repair works.
“Understand that HDB has sent a contractor to remove the loose concrete on the ceiling yesterday,” he added in his reply to the resident. “I have asked Madam Saniah, one of our grassroots volunteers who lives nearby to be in regular contact with your family to see what else is needed.”
Minister Shanmugam has served Chong Pang residents for 37 years, or nearly two generations. He has promised he “will continue to build an even better Yishun and a stronger community” in the years ahead.
