THE PAP Climate Action Group (CAG) brought green education and opportunities to Tiong Bahru this past Sunday (26 Apr) along Eng Hoon Street.
The Climate Action Day Fair brought together nine green environment stakeholders, CAG pillar leaders like MPs Poh Li San (Sembawang West SMC) and Foo Cexiang (Tanjong Pagar GRC), live singers and over 800 climate activists and Tiong Bahru families. They took part in activities like learning how to grow vegetables locally, browsing second-hand clothes and about upcoming environment events.
The CAG is dedicated to fostering a sustainable future for all Singaporeans. For MP Foo, this means bringing the local community together with small business partners who can make a difference for climate change.
“CAG works with all like-minded partners,” he told Petir in an exclusive interview. “In this case, we want to work with those who have a heart for sustainability.”
MP Foo co-chairs the Green Economy pillar of the CAG, which helps Singaporeans develop upon green and sustainability opportunities.
For MP Poh, who is co-Chairperson of the CAG, Climate Action Day underscores how people across Singapore can unite in the fight against climate change.
“We’ve brought in partners with many good ideas,” said MP Poh. “They talk about reduction in fashion waste with thrifting, to reducing plastic waste with BYO [Bring Your Own] water bottles for detergents and washing liquids. These are some very implementable, very actionable practices”
“We hope to make this a marquee event,” she added. “Every year, we want to organise this Climate Action Day right around 22nd of April, which is Earth Day.”
Adam Reutens-Tan from the Pan Pacific Conservation Foundation was glad to bring the Foundation’s conservation message to a large and varied crowd — and to highlight its future events.
“There’re so many stakeholders involved, and that’s really what climate action is all about — the involvement of many people coming together,” he told Petir during a rare quiet moment without people in front of his booth.
“We would love for everybody to join us on 22 May for our beach-cleaning exercise,” he added.
Other partners spotted at the Climate Action Day included Edible Garden City, the urban farming social enterprise, and upcycling furniture-makers CREUSE.
“Climate Action Day sets the foundation for our heartlands to be climate action hubs where residents can take the lead in fostering a culture of sustainability,” said CAG Chairperson Koh Poh Koon, who is also Senior Minister of State for Manpower.
“With each yearly celebration, we hope to form a lasting relationship between the CAG, our partners and residents and build a self-sustaining support network to drive sustainability in every neighbourhood.”
CAG pillar leaders MPs David Hoe (Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC), Lee Hui Ying (Nee Soon GRC), Hany Soh (Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC), Valerie Lee (Pasir Ris-Changi GRC) and Ng Shi Xuan (Sembawang GRC) were at Climate Action Day as well, visiting booths and listening to merchants, residents and environmental activists.
